Stabilization of a highly expansive soil using waste-tire-derived aggregates and lime treatment

This study investigates the combined efficacy of waste-tire-derived aggregate (TDA) materials and hydrated lime on compactability, compressive strength swelling potential a highly expansive soil from South Australia. A total 21 mix-designs, covering comprehensive range soil–TDA–lime combinations, were examined through standard Proctor compaction, unconfined (UCS) oedometer swell tests. The mobilized UCS exhibited ‘rise–fall’ behavior, peaking at 5% TDA content subsequently decreasing (monotonically) for higher inclusions TDA. Increasing mean particle size (from 1.67 to 3.34 mm) also contributed positively development. Addition soil/soil–lime-blends produced notable reductions in potential; reduction was primarily governed by contents, and, lesser degree, larger sizes. However, role reducing found be more significant than that enhancing UCS. As expected, treatment soil–TDA blends provided major further improvements reduction; achieved being proportional curing time. In view experimental results, soil–lime containing mass ratios up 10% (preferably employing coarse-sand-sized equivalent TDA) can deemed as suitable choices (capable adequately mitigating potential, while simultaneously UCS).
